Completely useless facts about London, Part Three
Our city is the biggest Urban Forest in the world. According to a UN definition, any area that has at least 20 percent trees is considered ‘A Forest’. And trees cover around 21% of the land in London, making this city an urban forest. In fact, 8.6 million Londoners live alongside 8.3 million trees. But it’s not just the actual woodland that makes London a forest; it’s everything else. Unlike many other cities in Europe, London has a huge variety of trees and greenery right in the heart of the metropolis; think the huge Hyde Park and Regent’s Park. Then’s there Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park and Clapham Common out on the fringes. There’s also the green spaces of the many private estates, gardens, all the greenery along the River Thames, and London’s iconic squares, which feature 900,000 ‘street trees’. In fact, a whopping 47 percent of this city is made up of green space. All this verdant foliage has led to plenty of wildlife re-wilding too, you’ll see parakeets galore, urban foxes, wild cats, and a gang of grizzly bears is well known for pestering people queuing for kebabs in the Hampton Court area… okay we might have made that last bit up, but the forest bit is true
