In order for someone to become an iconic London black cab driver, they must complete an extremely rigorous test called The Knowledge. It takes three years to learn. It involves them learning the name of every single street in London. I will repeat that; they have to learn the name of EVERY single street in London. It almost beggars belief. But it is the reason they are the best taxi drivers in the world. And you can have some fun testing them out by asking them to take you to obscure alleyways in far-off Streatham. Well okay maybe don’t do that, but you know what I mean … (Fun fact part 2, the cars they drive are called ‘Hackney Carriages’ - in the rather sweet anachronistic style that we English adore, taxis are still named after the old horse-drawn carriages of the 19th Century)
