Why are there 13 Green Sheds dotted around London’s squares?
While wandering in London you may notice an incongrous-looking Green Shed that looks like it has just arrived there from outer space. These huts are actually taxi driver’s refuges, put there from the 1870s to give taxi drivers somewhere to get a cup of tea and hearty meal, and so that they wouldn’t hang around in the pubs, and the dangerous consequences thereof (they had horses in those days). There used to be hundreds of them but today only 13 remain, and these days they are open to the public.
