Don’t mess with the Seigneur of the Swans

No joking, it is a treasonable offence in this country to kill a swan. The King (the Seigneur!) owns every single swan on open water in this country and they enjoy Royal Protection. One of the more bizarre summer events in our annual calendar is called Swan Upping in July when the Royal Parks count all their swans. Since the 12th Century it has meant that you were liable to be parted from some of your limbs if you were caught killing or stealing one. In these more humane times, you will just receive a £15,000 fine. In 2016 in the Cotswold village of Brimscombe, local residents were forced to go around with water pistols after two swans, aware of their Royal Protection, went rogue and tried to take control of the village; they vandalised several properties, attacked some children and damaged a car …
